VIIRS-NPP Time Series

Satellite band averaged data: water-leaving radiance, surface irradiance and solar normalized water-leaving radiance. These values are given as the mean flux (not the total flux) for each band. The total and in-band averages are calculated for each satellite. The in-band is calculated by limiting the relative spectral response to within 1% of the maximum value. A separate data listing (denoted by it's hour) is presented when MOBY collects more than one file per day. Six water-leaving radiances can be calculated from different combinations of MOBY four radiance collectors. The best water-leaving radiance is Lw1, determined from the upper two arms. Lw7 is also included and is calculated from the middle and bottom arms.

VIIRS-NPP RSR files were from the http://www.star.nesdis.noaa.gov/jpss/, the file downloaded was NG_RSRs.zip. Columns 1 and 2 in the VIIRS_F1_Fused_v3_RSR_M*.dat files were used to create the RSRs used to weight MOBY data. The readme file in this directory says "This data is provided by Northrop Grumman under the NPOESS contract (F04701-02-0502, NPOESS A&O)" CONTACT INFO: Mau-Song Chou: mau-song.chou@ngc.com, 27-Sep-11. The file was downloaded from the ftp site on 23-Nov-2011 by Stephanie Flora.

The Problem: MOBY259 was deployed on 5 Oct, with a completely new system to control MOBY and to acquire MOBY data. The first day’s data looked really good. But by day 2 the LuMid data (data acquired with the middle arm, vs top or bottom arm) were starting to increase in the blue until it was above the LuTop data. Because of this we will not be using data from LuMid, nor releasing products that use LuMid (except the day 1 data) for this deployment. After day 1 only Lw2 data will be available (which is Lw calculated from the top and bottom arm), however this data looks very good. In terms of the difference between a product calculated with Lutop and Lubot vs one calculated with Lutop and Lumid, there should be very little difference below 575 nm. Above 575 nm, the two products diverge as Raman becomes a more significant source of error for the KLu derived from Lutop and Lubot.

On Nov 8th MOBY stopped sending data. It looks like the computer is not booting correctly. If the controller can not be fixed at sea, it will be brought back to the MOBY tent for repairs. Once fixed it will be reconencted to the buoy.

On 7 January the repaired controller was reinstalled and data collection resumed.

October 2016 Reprocessing Information

In Oct 2016, a reprocessing of the MOBY data began. Three problems are being addressed: 1) the method to extrapolate Kl to the surface has been improved to include Raman scattering and chlorophyll fluorescence; 2) the arm depths used in retrievals was increased by 0.234 m; and 3) a single pixel shift in the data for the RSG collected at a bin factor of 384 for deployments MOBY203 to MOBY253. Initially only MOBY254 to current deployments were reprocessed. These deployments did not have the RSG single pixel shift problem. So for MOBY254 to current deployments only correction 1 and 2 are applied. As the older deployments are processed the data will be added to this directory. MOBY203 to MOBY253 will have had all three corrections applied.
