SeaWiFS Time Series

Satellite band averaged data: water-leaving radiance, surface irradiance and solar normalized water-leaving radiance. These values are given as the mean flux (not the total flux) for each band. The total and in-band averages are calculated for each satellite. The in-band is calculated by limiting the relative spectral response to within 1% of the maximum value. A separate data listing (denoted by it's hour) is presented when MOBY collects more than one file per day. Six water-leaving radiances can be calculated from different combinations of MOBY four radiance collectors. The best water-leaving radiance is Lw1, determined from the upper two arms. Lw7 is also included and is calculated from the middle and bottom arms.

The Problem: Sometime between Feb 24 and Feb 25, a boat probably struck MOBY. Stephanie noticed on Feb 27 that the data from the top arm was low, and divers were able to go out over the weekend and on Monday. The top arm and the collectors on the end of the top arm are damaged (both Edtop and Lutop), and the data from that arm cannot be used after Feb 24. We are planning to stop processing the data from the top arm, and only provide products using the midarm and bottom arm (Lw7, Lwn7). This is not something we can repair in the field, so it will be this way until the next deployment in May.

Email from Ken Voss on 4 May about a problem we found with the Es data: Warning! We just realized that when the boat (or something) struck MOBY and hurt the upper arm on Feb 25, it must have also hit MOBY hard enough to cause damage to the Es sensor at the top of the buoy. The Es data started to deviate significantly from the historical average on that day. While the Es is stable enough to be used in determining/normalizing for KLu, and thus the Lw7 product is not effected, since the Lwn product is directly normalized by Es, we have seen an increase in Lwn7 of approximately 60%. Now that we know this, we will be removing the Lwn7 product from the directory for the suspect period. If you are using Lwn rather than Lw you will need to remove this period from your analysis. The next replacement buoy will be going in the water next week.

October 2016 Reprocessing Information

In Oct 2016, a reprocessing of the MOBY data began. Three problems are being addressed: 1) the method to extrapolate Kl to the surface has been improved to include Raman scattering and chlorophyll fluorescence; 2) the arm depths used in retrievals was increased by 0.234 m; and 3) a single pixel shift in the data for the RSG collected at a bin factor of 384 for deployments MOBY203 to MOBY253. Initially only MOBY254 to current deployments were reprocessed. These deployments did not have the RSG single pixel shift problem. So for MOBY254 to current deployments only correction 1 and 2 are applied. As the older deployments are processed the data will be added to this directory. MOBY203 to MOBY253 will have had all three corrections applied.
